SMU was founded with the goal of advancing the professional and personal ambitions of its students by providing a demanding, yet supportive educational experience. Mission

SMU inspires and prepares students to become contributing citizens of the global community by educating them for professional careers in current and emerging fields within the context of an education informed by the sciences and humanities.

Accreditation and Memberships

Founding and Registration

Founded in 2012, Saint Monica University (SMU), the American International University, is Incorporated in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, as a degree-granting institution and is in Good Standing with the State.

Saint Monica University (SMU) is fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP) in Cameroon as “SMU Higher Institute” to offer the following Higher National Diploma (HND) certificates as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs and it is being mentored by the University of Douala.

St Monica University is accredited by the National Commission of Private Higher Education at the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP), Yaounde, Cameroon. This accreditation allows SMU to train students for the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) certificates, which themselves come from MINESUP. Additionally, SMU students can earn bachelor and master degrees from the prestigious state-owned University of Douala.

St Monica Vocational Institute (SMVI), which is an integral component of St Monica University, is authorized to offer vocational training programs and certifications in over two dozen programs spanning business, health, and technology domains.

Saint Monica University is headquartered in the State of Delaware, where its corporate offices are located and is approved to run a number of professional certifications in the fields of business, education, health, technology etc. SMU is also pursuing accreditation in the United States.

Saint Monica University (SMU) degrees are validated by the state-owned University of Douala, Cameroon. These degrees are equivalent to degrees from regionally accredited universities in the United States.

Saint Monica University (SMU): The American International University is a member of the

prestigious International Association of Universities (IAU). The IAU is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-based worldwide association of higher education institutions. Also known as the International Universities Bureau of the United Nations, it brings together over 600 higher education institutions and organizations from over 120 countries for reflection and action on common concerns and collaborates with various international, regional and national bodies active in higher education.

Saint Monica University (SMU) is just one of about a dozen African universities to join the Global Universities In Distance Education (GUIDE). The GUIDE Association was founded in 2005 by Marconi University with the aim to develop and support international cooperation and open and distance learning worldwide. By strengthening the role of higher education institutions as innovation and development drivers, GUIDE promotes the implementation of innovative results, insights and best practices in order to identify present, emergent and future needs of regional and international stakeholders and highlight potential areas for strategic partnership and transnational cooperation.

Saint Monica University (SMU) is a member of the prestigious association bringing together over 350 universities in over 75 countries. The Talloires Network is an international association of institutions committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education. University civic engagement and social responsibility means: educating future leaders for change; mobilizing university professors and students to address pressing societal issues, to combat poverty, and to improve public health; and adopting socially and environmentally responsible institutional policies and practices.

Saint Monica University (SMU) is currently a member of the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN). Founded in 1991 and originally named the European Distance Education Network, EDEN is an international educational association open to institutions and individuals dealing with e-learning, Open education, and distance education. EDEN is a not-for-profit organization, registered as a limited Company under English law. Being a membership organization with over 200 institutions and 1200 individuals from different levels of education and training, EDEN assists a wide range of organization, networks and experts to collaborate. We share knowledge, develop understanding amongst professionals in distance and e-learning and promote policies in Europe. EDEN is instrumental in the promotion of networking, international co-operation and professional development. EDEN organizes annual European conferences, releases academic publications, offers information services and plays useful role

in a wide range of European projects. Bi-annual Research Workshops and the Open Classroom Conferences increase the impact. From 1995, EDEN runs the European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning (EURODL). EDEN’s key asset has been the strong and active membership. By joining EDEN SMU became part of a developing innovative community of academics and practitioners, representing about 60 countries and over 420 institutions. Since 1997 the Secretariat of the Association has been hosted by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary.

Saint Monica University (SMU) is an educational partner of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), which is the world's largest anti-fraud organization and premier provider of anti-fraud training and education.

SMU brings to our students, programs that are at the intersection of the liberal arts and sciences as well as technology. Our education is defined as liberal in the sense of an education that is “liberating” – liberating the mind to think freely. One of the great challenges facing higher education in the next century will be related to the type of education that our young people will receive. The increasing demands on our educational system to educate for the skills required by the information age has often resulted in an emphasis on higher education towards technical skills at the expense of the liberal arts and sciences. At SMU, we provide our students with the right balance.

Our students are provided with a rigorous, intense education that both disciplines and expands the mind. Students develop a lifelong desire to learn and grow while also acquiring skills and knowledge necessary for success in their professional lives. At the heart of this education is the General Requirement, which exposes all our students to primary fields of inquiry and the cultural values that shape our world. We expect our students to perform at the highest level and set demanding standards in the classroom and virtual environments.

With the use of cutting edge technologies, SMU delivers some of the best career-focused programs to students across the globe. SMU has affiliations with local and international universities and other institutions. In addition, we are home to a number of independent academic and professional centers as well as academic journals. These programs and activities enrich the University’s intellectual life, open up opportunities for specialized study, and engage students with important issues in the wider world.

Our students are expected to improve the common good by utilizing their skills and knowledge to promote tolerance, compassion, and social justice. The curriculum is designed to engage students with important social concerns, both domestic and international, and prepare them to lead as informed citizens, socially responsive professionals, and active members of the community. It is because of this that our motto is Servire Sine Fine, the Latin for “Service Without Limit,” and our slogan is “Transforming Lives, Transforming Society.”

At SMU, we are committed to the success of our students. For this reason, we also have as one of our slogans “Learn with Support, Graduate with Confidence.” This is made possible by our responsive faculty and staff. In addition, we have an emphasis on small classes and a professionally oriented teaching faculty, which makes us an ideal university in which students can capitalize on the values and benefits of a liberal education that prepares them for the technological age. Our relatively small private university provides a sound education, where teaching and research for the faculty holds the primary rewards.
